Ideally, your thesis director will be someone with whom you have studied, worked, and want to continue working. However, because you may not have had the opportunity to take a course with all faculty members in your genre, it’s quite possible your director will be a faculty member you’ve not worked with, but whose work you admire. There is no guarantee that a member of the MFA faculty will agree to direct your thesis.

Current Students

If you have difficulty securing a thesis director, contact the Creative Writing MFA Program Director. On February 8 and 9, the MFA program hosted the 2018 Thesis Proposal Presentations. Each of the 18 graduate candidates presented their work and research in the program and proposed a thesis direction to the MCAD community for consideration and response. The thesis proposal should be approximately 8 pages, excluding the annotated bibliography. Remember that this is a proposal, not the thesis itself; tell us what you propose to do and how, don’t do it.

The Thesis Chair, should schedule a proposal review session with the entire committee and the student, informing the Graduate Coordinator of the time and place of the review session. Before writing the thesis, a student must submit a short thesis proposal to the MFA director. Students who intend to investigate some aspect of their teaching should explore possible topic areas with faculty members most knowledgeable about the topic and should do preliminary reading to gain some sense of the scholarship and research on the topic. Before beginning the investigation, students should seek IRB approval. In this course, master’s students engage in the research and writing of their thesis or capstone project. Upon completion and approval of the thesis, the student must submit the following documents to the LAS Graduate Student Services office by the last day of the conferral term. At the beginning of your defense semester, you must register with UCF College of Graduate Studies Thesis and Dissertation Services. You must follow the timeline and adhere to the deadlines listed. Once you have informal approval, complete the Thesis Proposal Form. This form must be turned into and signed by the program director before you can register for thesis hours. The student, in consultation with this faculty members should identity two other graduate faculty members and one person from the schools to serve on the thesis committee. The second reader is appointed by the Coordinator, considering faculty availability, faculty course load, and other factors. Creative Writing

Having a classroom or person-to-person platform for discussion allows for the energy of the body to expose itself. You will take notice as to how you feel when you are discussing the ideas, feelings and concepts that you have written. Or are you just “matter of fact” and lifeless in your verbal assertions? The goal is to entice your reader and audience to feel your convictions and transcend those feelings directly. It will help you make not only edits in your writing but also make changes in your speaking and how you feel about what you have written. As you move through the process of preparing your capstone project or thesis, you will submit drafts to your committee for review. You will submit your proposal or, if your proposal has already been approved by your committee, the most recent version of your thesis or project.

Master of Fine Arts Creative Writing

This section includes a brief introduction that forms the framework for the entire thesis and articulates the questions around which the creative project and supporting essays revolve. Though the MFA program is designed to allow students to complete the MFA degree in three years, occasionally a student will work toward an early graduation. Should this be your choice , understand that while we will all work toward helping you achieve this goal, it may mean that you will need to be more flexible than other students when it comes to course selection and thesis committee assignments. Your thesis director and readers will be in charge of approving the quality of the final project. The MFA coordinator and faculty will do our best to assign you the thesis director you request, but in order to distribute thesis duties equitably, you may be assigned a director and/or readers who are not your first choices on your list of preferences. You must apply for graduation with the registrar early in the semester you plan to graduate. The final day to apply for graduation can be found on the academic calendar.

  • Students are to abide by department and program deadlines for review and submission of the thesis/dissertation, if these deadlines are earlier than those stated by the Office of Graduate Studies.
  • All MFA students write theses that are composed of their own imaginative writing.
  • Students should not move forward in their thesis research until this IRB approval to do so has been received in writing.
  • Applicants must meet the minimum university requirements for graduate study.
